We are proud to donate to the Linnaeus Teaching Garden and provide the community with a custom outdoor fireplace and kitchen. Five local and national companies collaborated with us donating some of the material needed to complete this wonderful project. If you have not visited the Linnaeus Garden you are missing one of Tulsa’s great treasures.
Demolition & Concrete
Demolition of the old garden herb bed was the first phase of the project. We removed 4 tons of block and 5 tons of soil to make way for the foundation of the fireplace and kitchen. The new concrete was pinned to the existing concrete using 1/2″ rebar. We use premium 4,000psi concrete from Arrow Concrete Company.

Fireplace & Kitchen Construction
The Linnaeus fireplace was constructed using CMU block and a fireplace kit by Fire Rock. Generally we do not use fireplace kits, most fireplaces we build are custom to suit the owners needs. In addition to the fireplace kit about 300 concrete block were used to give the massive size of the fireplace. The stone used on the fireplace was made by Impressions in Stone, a Tulsa based company specializing in custom applications. Unfortunately, being a kit fireplace we were not able to incorporate a damper in this fireplace. Dampers can increase the heat output of the fireplace by adjusting the amount of air flow through the flue.

Linnaeus Fireplace Mantel
The mantel for the Linnaeus Fireplace is a piece of 8×8 Pecky Cypress cut from a sunken log recovered from Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana. Pecky Cypress is caused by the fungus “stereum taxodil” which can take more than 125 years to germinate inside the tree. The fungus then attacks the core of the tree causing brown pocket rot, creating the “pecky” appearance. In the 1800’s Lake Pontchartrain was used by timber companies to transport hand cut logs to New Orleans. At the time of cutting the tree was between 150 and 500 years old. This wood is very rare and we are fortunate to obtain on average twenty linear feet per year.

Kettle Hangar
The fireplace also features a cooking kettle hangar. This enables the fireplace to have more function than warmth or ambiance, the fireplace now contributes to food preparation. Our fireplace kettle hangars are hand made in Europe and are an inexpensive way to enhance the look and function of your fireplace.
